PNG, SVG, PDF or EPS? Choosing the right QR code file

Short answer: PDF or EPS for print shops, SVG for web designers and design programs, PNG for screens, documents and social media.

The four formats

FileTypeBest for
PNGPixels (500–4000 px)Websites, Word, PowerPoint, social media, email
SVGVectorWeb design, Figma, Canva, Illustrator, Inkscape
PDFVectorPrint shops, office printers, Word/InDesign
EPSVectorProfessional print, sign makers, older design software

Pixels or vector?

A PNG is made of pixels: enlarge it too much and the edges get blurry – which can make a code hard to scan. Choose 2000 or 4000 px for anything printed bigger than a business card.

A vector file (SVG, PDF, EPS) describes shapes, so it stays sharp at any size – from a sticker to a building banner.

Tips

  • Keep the vector file for reprints – you can download it again from My codes any time.
  • Transparent background: tick it in the design if the code goes on a coloured surface (keep enough contrast!).
  • Do not convert the file to JPG – it blurs the edges.

Questions

Which file does my print shop want?

Usually PDF. Sign makers often ask for EPS or SVG. If in doubt, send the PDF.
