How to create a Wi-Fi QR code for guests
Short answer: enter your network name (SSID), password and security type in a Wi-Fi QR code. Guests open the camera, scan and tap “Join” – no typing.
What you need
- Network name (SSID) – exactly as it appears in the Wi-Fi list, including capitals.
- Password – exactly as typed into the router.
- Security – almost always WPA/WPA2/WPA3. Choose “No password” only for open networks.
- Hidden network – tick it only if your network is hidden.
How it works on phones
The details are stored in the code in a standard format that the camera apps of iPhone (iOS 11 and newer) and Android understand. The code does not need the internet and never expires.
Use a guest network
Anyone who scans the code can join your network – exactly like reading the password from a card. For cafés, offices and rentals, create a guest network on your router, separate from your own devices, and put that one in the code.
Where to put it
- Table tents and the counter in cafés and restaurants.
- The room information folder in hotels and holiday rentals.
- Reception and meeting rooms in offices.
- Next to the router at home.
Add a frame with “Scan to join Wi-Fi” so people know what the code is for – and print the network name below it for laptops without a camera.
Questions
I changed the password. Does the code still work?
No. The old password is in the image, so make a new code. In GITECHY QR you can reuse the same design.
Do I need a dynamic code for Wi-Fi?
No – phones read Wi-Fi details directly from the code. A static code ($4.99) is the right choice.
